First experiences with gardening

Since our lifestyle has been so transient for the past eight years, I really haven't attempted a garden. So this year, I decided to attempt it. My husband helped me section out a part of our backyard and he dug up the grass for me too. We ended up getting a rototiller because the ground was like clay. Then we put some miracle grow dirt in it because I figured I could probably use the help since I wasn't sure about my green thumb. And then I planted some seeds and hoped for the best. In this picture we have (top) yellow squash, (middle) carrots, and (bottom) peppers.

I just bought the tomato plants and put them in, because I didn't think I could grow those from seed.

In this picture we have cucumbers and zucchini.

Well, everything grew a lot bigger then I expected! My big tomato plant is growing out of it's cage, but the tomatoes are looking good. They will be nice slicing tomatoes when they are ripe.
We have quite a lot of cherry tomatoes that we will enjoy for the rest of the summer also.

My garden has pretty much outgrown the space I allotted for it. I'll have to cut down on how many seeds I plant next year. I didn't think ALL of them were going to grow.

Here is some of our crop so far with lots more to come. I am going to be making a lot of zucchini bread, zucchini brownies, and having lots of squash and tomatoes in my recipes! And yes, there is two yellow squashes that grew together. Next year, I will have to separate my plants a little more as well.

Happy 4th of July!

I signed the girls up for a Kids Fun Run. It was free and it was a mile long. So I figured we could do it. They gave them real official runner numbers- they were so proud of them.

"Look mom, free T-shirts"!

"B" had gotten to the turn around point, so I got her coming towards us. "C" was doing her best, but running a little slow....

I was really proud of "C" doing the whole race without being picked up. There were a few requests, but her mean and motivational mom told her she could do it and to just keep on going. And she did it!

"A" had a blast doing this-that smile tells all!
And at the end of all of the running/walking they got a medal for finishing. What more can a kid ask for? And all of this for free! I think it might just be a yearly tradition for us.
